I think it’s fair to say DeWalt is one of the most recognized battery operated tool manufacturers on the market today, and it’s no surprise they have produced one of the most popular batteries operated chainsaws on the market.

A single 20v battery powers the DeWalt DCCS620P1. It pushes the power into a brushless motor to move the moving parts, you will be able to get 90 cuts with this battery, and for some may be a little sort, but if you have other DeWalt battery products, you will be able to interchange the batteries.

Bar Length

12ins Bar length makes this very much a DIY friendly battery powered chainsaw for some this will be a plus and others a negative, if you’re not planning on felling large established trees, then I can’t see a task it couldn’t tackle.

If you have been looking for a chainsaw, then I’m sure you have come across the name Husqvarna what may be more of a surprise is they are now producing Battery operated chainsaws, as they are more renowned for their excellent gas powered counterparts.

Battery

We have one 40-Volt battery that powers a brushless motor as we have come to expect and demand in a top of the range chainsaw, you can switch between powers setting with an easy to use the LCD screen to maximize battery life when full power is not needed. It pushes the chain at a speed of 2,263FPM.

14insh bar length is what comes as a standard, but you can change this out and put in an 11inch if you want a smaller size. This size is ideal for felling small trees and tree limbs.

Features

This is a very lightweight chainsaw and comes in at an incredible 6.5lbs and a very low noise output 101DB guaranteed, but when measured just 98DB, this is around the noise level of a gas powered lawnmower to give you an idea of the sound.  We like that to tighten the chain by hand as there is a tool-less chain tensioning wheel.

Pros
  • Ultra-Low Weight
  • Different Power Setting
  • Low Noise Level
  • Tool-Less Chain Tensioning
Cons
  • Small Bar Length

Best Budget Battery Powered Chainsaw

There are more expensive battery operated chainsaws than above, but I don’t believe they are any better than the above list. If you are on a little smaller budget, then you are going to tamper your expectations a little and give up on a bit of power or some features, but that’s not to say these are not up to standard as they are very much so and may be perfect for the job you are tackling everyone doesn’t want a chainsaw that can fell a tree.

Battery Chainsaw Buying Guide

When it comes to buying a chainsaw, the important factors all remain the same, but there other things like what battery to consider when buying, so what we want to do is go over each factor to consider to help when you come to make your purchase.

Value for Money

This is a very subjective matter and one I thought about leaving out, but in the end, I thought it was worth saying. What I would do is think of the jobs that you are thinking of tackling then get the electric chainsaw that best suits your needs.

People often buy the biggest and best, and it can be overkill as sometimes it makes a small job harder than it needs to be as you will be using a large, powerful battery chainsaw to take a tiny tree branch out.

So despite this being very subjective, it’s worth thinking of the type of jobs you will be tackling then get a power type to suit.

Performance

A tough one to tell unless you have used the tool in question, and that’s what took me so long on deciding what chainsaw I wanted. I read endless reviews and watched endless videos; in the end, I had it down to the list I offer above.

Each battery chainsaw will have a limited performance based on its power output, so like above, think about what jobs you will be undertaking and match it up with the power. A budget chainsaw is going to have problems felling a large tree. This is not a performance problem; this is just incompatible for the job, so pre-purchasing thinking is key.

Ease of Use

Now I can get straight into this and say all the above battery operated chainsaws are so easy to use. Still, it’s worth reading reviews and looking if the chainsaw you are considering has features that make it harder to use like bad ergonomics, so it’s unsteady and unbalanced, but as I say, not on the list have this problem.

Bar Length

We use the term bar to indicate the length of the chain again you need to think about the jobs you will be taking on to match up the perfect bar for your needs to help with this we have put a little guide below to help you select the perfect size for your needs.

It’s important to remember the bar length, and the perfect size will have a lot to do with the size of wood that you will be cutting. Still, if you keep in mind that you want a bar length that is around 2inch lager than the size of wood you will be tackling, you can use a battery chainsaw on a larger piece of wood if you don’t have this extra size, but the job will become a lot more awkward and a little more unsafe.

12inch to 14inch Bar Length – Manly for home users who are looking to cut small trees and small tree limbs.

14inch to 18inch – Have more mature trees that you will be tackling with larger tree limbs then this size we are ideal, I would say it’s still in the home user group but can tackle bigger jobs.

18inch to 22inch – This size is starting to get into the professional group and is for people who are looking to tackle much bigger jobs and have mature trees to tackle.

22inch to 36inch – Now we are into the heavy-duty professional category and are more used by a lumberjack rather than a homeowner, so you should take careful consideration if you are thinking of getting a chainsaw with a bar over 22inch.

Battery

Lithium-ion batteries are the most commonly used in battery operated chainsaws and mainly because they are much lighter and last much longer than other types. Also, they can be charged much faster.

There are three main things that you should look for when looking at a battery, and these are:

Amps – The amount of current the battery can give your battery chainsaw
Amp-Hours – This determines the number of hours that the battery can give of the maximum power
Voltage – This indicated the force that is availed that pushes the force from one electric part to another

So what you want to look for is higher numbers in each. This will mean that you are getting a very powerful battery chainsaw.

Key Point – it’s not only the battery that gives your chainsaw the power. It is the motor. This takes power and makes all the moving parts move; what you want to look for is a brushless motor. This is universally known as being the best on the market.

Battery Tool Brands

We all have our favored power tool brands, and if you go with any of the leading names on the market today you won’t go far wrong, and you will be more than happy with your chainsaw but to give you a little more information on picking then I always follow the below advice.

If you can’t decide, let’s say, for instance, between the Makita and the DeWalt model, I would always say what other battery operated power tools do you have? Whatever the answer to that question, lets say its DeWalt I would then say go with that as you will save a lot of money on batteries over the long term as nearly all these batteries are interchangeable. If you now have 4/6 batteries, you will have a lot more to swap out before you have to down tools to charge them.

Safety Features

Safety features you want to see in the front handguard, and combined chain brake lever as a minimum, there are other features like chain catcher, but the first is the main thing you want.

You will see a lot of safety features, and that is great the more, the better, but I always want the see the front handguard and combined chain brake lever.

Conclusion

I hope that my guide helps you find the best battery powered chainsaw for your needs; it’s tough to pick a battery chainsaw, but what I found when choosing mine and getting the right one was to think of the jobs I would be doing and then pick the bar length I wanted then looked at the most powerful this give me the best for me. I’m sure if you do the same, you will find the perfect one for you.
