Lawn Mower for Hills Buying Guide
Some people believe that buying a lawnmower for hills is just like buying any other but that’s not the reality, there are a number of points that you should keep in mind when making your purchase. Also, there are some key things to work out to get the perfect lawnmower for the hill you will be tackling and we will cover all below to make sure you get the best mower for your needs.
Safety
The first and most important element to consider is safety; there is no dough that it’s much more dangers’ mowing on a hill than it is on a flat lawn. If you want the safest option then a walk behind lawnmower is what you want as there is a lot less chance of tip over than there would be with a sit-on top.
When mowing move left to right on the hill rather than up and down with a push mower but if you are using a sit-on top mower you want to go up and down as this is safer.
It can seem very boring when mowing like this but it really is the safest option when it comes to mowing hills, you also want to really only be mowing embankments or hills with walk behind mowers as they are much safer but if you are tackling a large area a walk behind mower just might not cut it. In these cases I would recommend using a sit-on top mower but if you get a really steep area swap over to a push mower to make the job a lot safer.
Keep safety in your mind at all times whenever you are cutting grass on hills. Remember you want to minimize the risk of tip over as much as possible and rushing a job can lead to serious injury’s or much worse and no one want that to get the job done a few minutes faster.
Hill Gradient
This is something to work out as it will allow you to choose the best lawnmower for the hill you will be tackling and getting this right will make getting the job done that much easier.
Hill gradient has 3 different ways that you can measure and there is no right or wrong way but the easiest I have found was measure the vertical distance (VD) and the horizontal distance (HD) and then calculate using this formula (VD÷HD) x 100.
So for examples are slope has a vertical distance of 20 and the horizontal distance 60. We would (20÷60) x 100 = 33.33% so this is the gradient of our hill.
Some lawnmowers are not very good and really steep slopes and other like a sit-on top could even be totally unsafe.
Hill Size
Haven’t we just discovered this? No, we have just found out the gradient this is the size in mass you don’t have to crack out the calculator here if you don’t want to.
If the hill mass is large you need to know having a manual push mower is going to take you a very long time to get the job done, so you would want a motorised lawnmower or if the gradient is not too big a sit-on top.
If you’re going to be tackling a very small hill than a manual lawnmower can be more than adequate and be more than efficient of getting the job done.
So you need to think what size of area mass you will be tackling and then pair it with the best power type.
Hill Obstacles
What is on your hill? Just grasses then you are more than likely fine to choose any type of mower as long as it’s the right fit for the mass and gradient. But if you have trees or other obstacles then lumping around a large lawnmower is going take some doing and will make the task very hard and a smaller lighter option would be much better in this instance.
What to look at…
So now we know the size of the gradient and the mass of area what are the other things that we need to think of well I have you’re covered below.
Deck Size
Looking at the deck size will allow you access if its large or small getting a mower with a large deck will be no good if you have lots of obstacles as it will be hard to move around but a large deck will allow you to get the job done a lot faster but only on obstacle free hills.
Easy to Use
Some mowers are going to be much easier to use like a manual push mower will be very simple you simple push it were a walk behind may be a little harder as you have to pull the cord to start if its gas and can be heavy. If you’re looking at a sit-on top then you will want to get one with cruise control this will really help when on hills.
Weight
As you are going to using it on a hill weight is a little more important you want a mower that you can take full control of as something that is very heavy is going to be much harder to control and can take you with it if the worst was to happen.
Wheels
You want a walk behind mower with rear driven wheels as front driven wheel mowers just isn’t going to help with any gradients over a few percent, it’s not even recommend using a front driven wheel mower on hills and you would be best advised to use a manual push mower. One extra is to look for a lawnmower with larger wheels at the back than the front this will give you a lot more traction.
Self-Propelled
If you have a large area to cover then you want some help as cutting grass on a hill can get very tiring, you want a self-propelled mower for large areas and one with rear driven wheels to give you the most benefit.
Conclusion
We hope that our guide helps you make a really informed decision on picking the best lawn mower for hills for your yard, there are many different things to consider but being practice and thinking about the hill that you need to tackle and then putting the tips in our guide should really help you pick the best mower.
There is no one single best mower for hills as each situation is different and you need to sit and think about each element to get that perfect fit for your hill lawn.
